BMIM x MCM: Third Character 2025

MCM, Marseille (FR)

As a reference to Federico Fellini, who used to call film music the “Third Character”, this project aims to facilitate meetings between film composers, directors and producers. Selected composers are invited to meet duos of producers and directors working on a film project in development during the Festival international Music & Cinema Marseille (MCM). From mid-December to mid-January, composers had the opportunity to apply for this project via the website of MCM.

It’s the perfect way for composers, directors and producers alike to build a network and to find common creative ground. Collaborations born out of these meetings have the opportunity to apply for financial support for the score through authors’ rights organisations Sabam, Sacem and Buma Music in Motion (BMIM) (only for member composers).

Matchmaking

The market is organized on the basis of a call for projects: short films, features and TV series, French and International, as well as an application dedicated to composers. The duo producer/director will choose a project – short film, feature or TV series – that they are assured to produce. One month prior to MCM, the script and the musical statement of intent will both be sent to the composers selected to participate to the market. The composers have three weeks to work on extracts that they will propose to the duo during the festival.

In the course of the festival, each composer will meet with the producers and directors, present their music and discuss the creative process in detail. At the end of these meetings, it is up to each duo to consider a future collaboration with one of the composers.
