Roundtable: Who Decides What AI Can Learn?
The rise of AI in the music industry does not only come with creative questions, it also brings up a lot of ethical and legal questions. In this roundtable we focus on one urgent questions: can broadcasters use their existing music archives as trainingdata for AI models? Broadcasters have a huge collection of music for film, television, radio and online media.
But who owns this use of music? And what does it mean for composers, musicians and right holders. We also talk about ownership of the output from those AI models. Which agreements do we need to make to make this use legit? How transparent should use of this trainingdata be?

Roundtable: Fair Play – Rethinking Representation in Media Composition
How do we ensure fair representation in an industry that remains largely homogeneous? Are there structural barriers that prevent diverse voices from entering or thriving? And how can we actively support and empower new talent? Recent findings from the Celluloid Ceiling report show a troubling trend: in 2024, women made up just 9% of composers on the 250 top- films, a drop from 14% in 2023. 90% of those films had no women composers at all.
Interestingly, when at least one woman directed the film, the number rose to 14%, compared to only 7% on films with exclusively male directors. In this roundtable we come together to reflect on these numbers, share lived experiences, and explore how the industry can foster a more inclusive and equitable future.

Contracts Under Pressure – How to Protect the Composer
ECSA Creator Talk
The position of composers is under increasing pressure. The latest report by ECSA shows that buyouts, pseudo-publishing and lack of transparency are depriving composers of their rights and remuneration. Meanwhile, major producers, broadcasters, and streaming platforms are gaining more power – and the EU Copyright Directive (2019) is often sidestepped in practice.
In the Netherlands – where media music is closely tied to international players – it’s time to take concrete action. How can composers better protect themselves against unfair contracts? What legal and policy changes are needed to turn the tide? What role should film producers play in creating fairer working conditions?
This panel explores actionable steps to improve the bargaining position of composers. We discuss the ECSA’s recommendations and how to implement them in Dutch policy and practice – because fair pay can’t wait.
This panel is co-funded by Creative Europe.

True Detective: Night Country – The Power of Music in a Cold World
The chilling atmosphere of True Detective: Night Country isn’t just about its dark setting and intriguing characters – the music plays an equally important role. Composer Vince Pope and Emmy-winning Music Supervisor Susan Jacobs take you on a journey through their unique collaboration for this latest chapter in the iconic series.
Following in the footsteps of legend T Bone Burnett, Pope emphasized a low-key score that makes the cold and isolation of Alaska almost tangible. With special instruments like the Fujara – a Slovakian flute with a mysterious, resonant sound – and the raw voice of Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq, the music balances tension, mysticism and the powerful female energy that drives the story.
In this panel, you’ll get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look: How did Pope find his voice within the True Detective legacy? What were the biggest challenges and creative breakthroughs? How do Pope and Jacobs work with the director to capture the perfect atmosphere? Dive into the creative process and discover why this soundtrack is so much more than background music.
