*Cue Epic Anime Music

Felix Meritis, Amsterdam

Anime has been booming ever since its origin. With the rise of Crunchyroll and other streaming services, even more fans now have access to the vast amount of anime that is around. Next to that, we see lots of brands jumping to collaborate. Think of the Sailor Moon x Jimmy Choo or the Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration with Dolce & Gabbana. One of the pillars of anime is music. Decades ago artists such as Geinoh Yamashirogumi and Kenji Kawai were pushing the boundaries of mixing electronic music with traditional Japanese instruments in the now iconic AKIRA and Ghost In The Shell. Animation is where innovation in music scoring is happening. It is a fertile ground for melodic electronic music. Today a new generation of composers are pushing the envelope further by creating unique sounds and melodies.

In this panel, attendees will have the chance to meet acclaimed composer and electronic artist kensuke ushio – known for his superb work on A Silent Voice, Ping Pong, Devilman Crybaby and Chainsaw Man. He will speak about the unique process of scoring music for anime series and how he incorporates his background as an electronic music artist to create some of the most exciting scores of the moment. Ellie Harrison from Crunchyroll can tell us how important music is in this genre and what the role of Crunchyroll is in anime becoming more mainstream. Naho Saito brings in the unique perspective of Aniplex, a Japanese animation studio and music production company.

Check-In at HBO’s The White Lotus

Felix Meritis, Amsterdam

Jungle sounds, hissing snakes, pan flutes, a roaring bass and chilling screams. If there is a soundtrack that captures the atmosphere of the series well (and also keeps ringing in your head for weeks), it is the score of The White Lotus, composed by Canadian Cristobal Tapia de Veer. He will appear as a keynote speaker at the BMIM x ADE Conference.

The music not only plays a major role in the background in this hit series. The soundtrack of The White Lotus has one of the leading roles. The music creates the alienating and oppressive atmosphere, increases the tension and is supplemented where necessary by animal sounds.

The soundtrack contributes relentlessly to the message of this dark and wry series. “The soundtrack should give the viewer the feeling that a human sacrifice could be made at any moment,” Tapia de Veer said in an interview with Vulture. “The animal noises and excited cries make us view these strange humans as a group of chimpanzees. It is a form of voyeurism: we watch these privileged people doing their incomprehensible things.”

MEET THE MUSIC SUPERVISORS : The Power of Music on Screen

Felix Meritis, Amsterdam

Where music used to play a modest background role in films and series, we can now say with confidence that it has taken one of the leading roles. Would the final season of Stranger Things have ever become so popular without that specific Kate Bush track? And would The White Lotus ever have had such a large audience without that atmospheric soundtrack? We’ll never know, but we can talk about it. And we’ll do just that in this panel during ADE.
